Goodbye To A Lion

The one thing I’ll remember about Senator Kennedy, above all else, is that he was always there.
That may not sound like much, but it truly means quite a lot. Kennedy was a constant in our national politics, from the time when my parents were kids until today. For just shy of fifty years he fought [...]
Thoroughly Inappropriate Commentary On The Current News Cycle
Posted on June 25, 2009 by andrew- Filed Under Farrah Fawcett, Mark Sanford, Michael Jackson, obituaries | Leave a Comment
People who are really, really, really happy (even though they would never admit it) right now:
1) Mark Sanford
People who would theoretically be justified in being a bit annoyed to have been totally and inescapably overshadowed:
1) Farrah Fawcett
News cycles are weird.

Pretty bird, pretty bird
Why you so still?
Pretty bird, pretty bird
We’ve been waiting on you
You go west for the black setting sun
You go south to the white spirit world
You go east for those real green eyes
You go north, walk the good red road
Pretty bird
There’s a mirror in heaven
Pretty bird, pretty bird
There’s a window on earth

Deep Throat Dead

Mark Felt, outed as Deep Throat three years ago, has passed away.
UPDATE: I shouldn’t have said “outed” since Felt himself went public with the story. “Self-outed”?
David Foster Wallace

That’s awfully unexpected and sad.
I wasn’t a huge fan, but there were a few of his essays I very much enjoyed. The one about grammar in Consider the Lobster comes to mind, for example. I also liked picking up Inifinite Jest once every few years and deciding that this was the time I was going [...]

Wow, very unexpected and very sad.
“See, here I am now by myself, uh, er, talking to myself. That’s, that’s chaos theory.”

Dr. Edward Lorenz, a meteorologist who somewhat accidentally helped create chaos theory, has passed away.
Lorenz’s “butterfly effect” is best known for its vital influence on Michael Chrichton’s seminal Jurassic Park, but I guess it probably had other important scientific value as well.
No, joking about my love for Jurassic Park aside, Lorenz was a fairly important [...]
RIP That Damned Dirty Ape Guy

Holy crap, Charlton Heston died? And just when he was so close to seeing the people of his nation’s capital finally delivered from oppression. 1
Don’t worry, Charlie. As soon as I get my assault rifle, I’ll be firing off a few rounds in your name.
See what I did there? It’s a Moses reference and an [...]
Dith Pran, 1942-2008

Via Chris in Paris, I see that Dith Pran, a survivor of and invaluable witness to the Khmer Rouge terror, has passed away.
The timing of Dith Pran’s death is a bit of a coincidence for me, personally: I started rereading Samantha Power’s phenomenal A Problem From Hell a few weeks ago “as a protest” when [...]
