Signs Winter Break Is Way Too Damned Long

1) I just made the top 500 (#408) scores in one of the Batman: Arkham Asylum combat challenges. That’s the top 500 out of all XBox 360 players of the game, everywhere. It’s a fun game, but spending enough time playing it over the past three weeks to get better at it then all but [...]

Things That Annoy Me To Distraction While I’m Trying To Get Work Done

Posted on November 20, 2009 by andrew- Filed Under Media, books, music, the internets | Leave a Comment

1) Terrible analogies which undermine otherwise valid points
I’m reading the chapter entitled “Realising the Democratic Potential of the Internet” from Coleman and Blumler’s The Internet and Democratic Citizenship. They describe a feature on the White House’s website which allows the user to “Send a message to the President,” and explain that it doesn’t lead to [...]

Pearl Jam Is Confused By The Intertubes

Posted on August 3, 2009 by andrew- Filed Under Pearl Jam, music, the internets | Leave a Comment

I find this interesting for two reasons:
1) I’m one of those people who misses album art and liner notes in this otherwise wonderful digital age, and Tom Tomorrow’s art for the album is pretty cool.
2) “Find images from the album that have been scattered across the Net, and win a free downloadable mp3 of a [...]

The Biggest Wagon Is The Empty Wagon Is The Noisiest -or- Steve Is Wrong About Subjective Song Preferences

Posted on June 30, 2009 by andrew- Filed Under R.E.M., music | 4 Comments

Steve has posted a list of his favorite R.E.M. songs. Or, more accurately, the following:
I thought I’d share my personal R.E.M. “Best of” list. It consists of nothing more than a list of the songs that I thought I would enjoy listening to if they came up as I played through this list on [...]

All Evidence Has Been Buried All Tapes Have Been Erased But Your Footsteps Give You Away So You’re Backtracking

Every American should have to look at every one of these pictures and consider precisely what was done in our name. A huge thank you to the ACLU for fighting to get this stuff into the hands of the public.
…In other news, I find it funny that Radiohead’s Hail to the Thief has been playing [...]

Very Quick Review: Franz Ferdinand

Posted on January 28, 2009 by andrew- Filed Under Animal Collective, Franz Ferdinand, music | Leave a Comment

I keep seeing reviews of the new Franz Ferdinand album in which the reviewer suggests that fans of the band’s first two albums might not like this new one, because it’s a bit of a departure. Allow me to say that this criticism makes no sense. The new album fits in perfectly with the old [...]

Finally, A Year-End Music Wrap-Up Is Actually Useful

Posted on December 19, 2008 by andrew- Filed Under MIA, music | Leave a Comment

Paper Planes, possibly my favorite song of the year (and I loved it several months before it showed up on the soundtrack to a Seth Rogan movie and became the hot single of the moment, dammit), was sampled from a Clash song! Who knew?!?

Jimi Hendrix Lives

Posted on November 23, 2008 by andrew- Filed Under Guitar Hero, Jimi Hendrix, music, video games | 1 Comment

So I’m sitting here playing some Guitar Hero World Tour
and all of the sudden an animated Jimi Hendrix pops up on stage to play with me. Did no one think that reanimating dead rock stars, as opposed to simply using their music and showing the game’s other characters playing it, might be a little creepy? [...]

The Most Awesome Thing I’ve Read On Wikipedia Today

From the Korn page:
The band’s catalogue consists of nine consecutive debuts in the top ten of the Billboard 200,[2] including a compilation album, Greatest Hits Vol.1, and their untitled eighth album, released on July 31, 2007. To date, Korn has sold over 30 million albums worldwide, including 16.5 in the U.S.,[3] while earning six Grammy [...]

Apple May Need To Go Back To Work On This One

Posted on September 13, 2008 by andrew- Filed Under iTunes, music, video games | Leave a Comment

I was playing around with Apple’s newly unveiled “Genius” recommendations and pulled up the list for “Anarchy in the U.K.”
The results are a near-perfect track listing for Guitar Hero III, excluding only the songs from the game I already own.
There may be a few bugs in the algorithm.

Random Thought At 12am

Posted on September 7, 2008 by andrew- Filed Under Automatic for the People, R.E.M., meta, music | Leave a Comment

I like how, even after 17 years of listening to the album, I always forget that there’s another track on Automatic for the People after “Nightswimming”- and it’s an even better track, “Find the River”! It’s like an awesome surprise at the end of every listen (probably brought on by “Nightswimming” seeming to be an [...]

Because If There’s One Thing I Love, It’s The Beach

I’m going out of town tomorrow morning. I’ll be back on Tuesday, but then I’ll be away again next weekend. Don’t expect me to have much time to say anything about the Republican’s convention, as I won’t really be around. Worse yet, don’t expect me to say much about Obama’s big speech tonight, as I’m [...]

Random Outrage At 2:30am

Looking at the Black Cat schedule to see if anything cool is upcoming, I see a local band calling itself “Len Bias“. I’m not sure why this should offend me so, but it does. I guess because if they ever made any money they’d be cashing in on his name.

How Did I Miss This?

Posted on July 29, 2008 by andrew- Filed Under Elvis Costello, music | Leave a Comment

Elvis Costello and the Imposters released an album in May. It features collaborations with Jenny Lewis, who I absolutely love. The critical response suggests it is a healthy addition to Elvis’s catalog of later rock albums, “much in the vein of his relative comeback album When I Was Cruel and at times even Blood and [...]

Really Pathetic Question

Allow me to preface this with an acknowledgment that the following renders me roughly as out-of-touch as a Republican presidential nominee.
So, umm, can anyone suggest some music blogs I might enjoy? It occurs to me I no longer listen to the radio in any capacity whatsoever. I subscribe to a small number of podcasts, but [...]

Topic For Discussion

EW’s list of “The 100 best albums from 1983 to 2008″ is the worst music-based list of “The [X] best [whatever] from [given time period]” ever produced. Agree or disagree1?

Keep in mind that a Green Day album is #6 while Nevermind is completely omitted. Oh, also (and clearly I’m focusing on the music I know [...]

R.E.M. Still Rocks

Posted on June 12, 2008 by andrew- Filed Under R.E.M., music | 1 Comment

I saw R.E.M. at Merriweather last night. I was shocked by how much of their older songs they played and by how good the band and especially Michael Stipe sounded and looked. Stipe was very much his classic self, having a wonderful time dancing goofily around the stage and saying funny Stipe-y things to the [...]
