Jimi Hendrix Lives

So I’m sitting here playing some Guitar Hero World Tour
and all of the sudden an animated Jimi Hendrix pops up on stage to play with me. Did no one think that reanimating dead rock stars, as opposed to simply using their music and showing the game’s other characters playing it, might be a little creepy? [...]

From the Korn page:
The band’s catalogue consists of nine consecutive debuts in the top ten of the Billboard 200,[2] including a compilation album, Greatest Hits Vol.1, and their untitled eighth album, released on July 31, 2007. To date, Korn has sold over 30 million albums worldwide, including 16.5 in the U.S.,[3] while earning six Grammy [...]
Apple May Need To Go Back To Work On This One

I was playing around with Apple’s newly unveiled “Genius” recommendations and pulled up the list for “Anarchy in the U.K.”
The results are a near-perfect track listing for Guitar Hero III, excluding only the songs from the game I already own.
There may be a few bugs in the algorithm.

Random Thought At 12am

I like how, even after 17 years of listening to the album, I always forget that there’s another track on Automatic for the People after “Nightswimming”- and it’s an even better track, “Find the River”! It’s like an awesome surprise at the end of every listen (probably brought on by “Nightswimming” seeming to be an [...]

I’m going out of town tomorrow morning. I’ll be back on Tuesday, but then I’ll be away again next weekend. Don’t expect me to have much time to say anything about the Republican’s convention, as I won’t really be around. Worse yet, don’t expect me to say much about Obama’s big speech tonight, as I’m [...]

Looking at the Black Cat schedule to see if anything cool is upcoming, I see a local band calling itself “Len Bias“. I’m not sure why this should offend me so, but it does. I guess because if they ever made any money they’d be cashing in on his name.

How Did I Miss This?

Elvis Costello and the Imposters released an album in May. It features collaborations with Jenny Lewis, who I absolutely love. The critical response suggests it is a healthy addition to Elvis’s catalog of later rock albums, “much in the vein of his relative comeback album When I Was Cruel and at times even Blood and [...]
Really Pathetic Question

Allow me to preface this with an acknowledgment that the following renders me roughly as out-of-touch as a Republican presidential nominee.
So, umm, can anyone suggest some music blogs I might enjoy? It occurs to me I no longer listen to the radio in any capacity whatsoever. I subscribe to a small number of podcasts, but [...]

EW’s list of “The 100 best albums from 1983 to 2008″ is the worst music-based list of “The [X] best [whatever] from [given time period]” ever produced. Agree or disagree1?
Keep in mind that a Green Day album is #6 while Nevermind is completely omitted. Oh, also (and clearly I’m focusing on the music I know [...]
R.E.M. Still Rocks

I saw R.E.M. at Merriweather last night. I was shocked by how much of their older songs they played and by how good the band and especially Michael Stipe sounded and looked. Stipe was very much his classic self, having a wonderful time dancing goofily around the stage and saying funny Stipe-y things to the [...]

Fred Schneider of the B-52s read Scott McClellan’s book to the tune of Love Shack last night. It was awesome.

Jessica at Feministing:
Aw, shit. Kmart is selling abstinence-gear for juniors.
Featuring what Kmart calls a “bold abstinence screen print,” the True Love Waits sweatpants come in blue, yellow and gray. I also think it’s no coincidence that on the same page they carry “Life is sweet” pants. I have no idea if the pants are [...]

Eugene Robinson name-checks Talking Heads and Stop Making Sense while David Brooks cites David Byrne and Elvis Costello1 as forerunners of the “cool geek” movement to which he devotes his entire column.
I’m not really sure why this would matter to anyone, but at least the coincidence gave me something amusing to note.
Of course, Brooks refers [...]
The Radiohead Nissan Pavilion Clusterfuck Saga Continues

I’ve had about 50 people find my blog while searching for some combination of the words “Radiohead”, “Nissan”, and “clusterfuck”, so I’m going to keep milking that for all it’s worth. Anyway, as has been reported by a few sources, Nissan Pavilion is offering some of the ticket holders unable to enter the pavilion replacement [...]

Colin posted the following to Radiohead’s Dead Air Space:
To everyone who made it, and put up with the torrents on the lawn, and came early to catch the Liars and our show, thank you so much for braving the deluge. I hope you heard what you came for, the music and lights diverting you from [...]

As you may or may not know, Radiohead was attempting to make this tour a bit more friendly to the environment than the typical ginormous rock tour. In light of last night’s fiasco in which several thousands of cars circled aimlessly around Virginia for upwards of three hours, spewing carbon (among other things) into our [...]

Don’t ask about the concert. Just don’t ask.
I will never go to Nissan Pavillion again. Ever. Not even if Radiohead were playing there again in a massive festival featuring a rejuvenated and reunited Talking Heads, a similarly rejuvenated R.E.M., Elvis Costello (who needs no rejuvenation), David Bowie (I’m not so sure about him), a reunited [...]

I think Creep has to be just about the last Radiohead song I would expect Prince to cover. If Prince genuinely likes Radiohead, wouldn’t you expect him to like their more unusual stuff? And if he was just trying to play a big arena [...]
