Happy “Your Marriage Is Now Recognized” Day!

Posted on July 7, 2009 by andrew- Filed Under DC, gay marriage | Leave a Comment

This is a big day for a lot of District residents. Congratulations.
I’m almost certain that we’ll be performing same-sex marriages, in addition to recognizing them, before the year is out. It may be a battle, but it’s one I’m quite certain the good guys can win.
I do love this city.

Predictably Infuriating

Ignore for a moment the validity of any argument that could be made either in favor of or against same-sex marriage. Under what possible definition of just government should Congress be able to define marriage law for a local jurisdiction, given that every other local jurisdiction in the country has complete control over its own [...]

DC Rocks (Except For Marion Barry)

Posted on May 5, 2009 by andrew- Filed Under DC, DC City Council, Marion Barry, gay marriage | Leave a Comment

Breaking News:
Washington Post reporter Tim Craig relays that the D.C. Council has voted 13-0, without debate, to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states. Watch D.C. Wire for updates.
The approved law was added as an amendment to another bill, and can be seen on the second page of that bill’s text (.pdf).
Hilarious update to the [...]

Barry The Homophobe

Posted on April 28, 2009 by andrew- Filed Under Marion Barry, gay marriage | Leave a Comment

I’ve long considered the Former Mayor for Life to be more of an entertainingly bizarre fixture of public life in Washington than anything else. I suppose he really is just a despicable old man who should have gone away a long time ago. Oh well.
By the way, “I am a politician who is moral,” is [...]

Iowa’s Modern Day Andrew Jackson

Posted on April 14, 2009 by andrew- Filed Under Iowa, gay marriage | Leave a Comment

In response to a Supreme Court ruling in 1831 that attempted to prevent President Andrew Jackson from killin’ a bunch o’ Injuns like he wanted, Jackson supposedly said, “John Marshall has made his decision, now let him enforce it,” and then proceeded with his original plan.
Doing the exact same thing in order to enforce discrimination [...]

Shifting The Civil Rights Narrative

Marc Ambinder has an interesting post on Mitt Romney’s history with marriage equality, but he flubs the conclusion:
Of all the potential 2012 candidates, Huntsman and Gov. Sarah Palin are closest to where the public is. Romney’s next.
Judging by the rest of the post, it’s probably safe to guess that this was a typo and Ambinder [...]

Mike Huckabee Is Very Nice And Polite, But He’s Still A Bigot

Posted on December 10, 2008 by andrew- Filed Under Mike Huckabee, The Daily Show, gay marriage | 3 Comments

I caught this interview last night, as well. For the most part, I thought Stewart and Huckabee did a great job of sitting down and having a calm, reasonable discussion (and interviews like this make it quite difficult to dislike Huckabee, even if I do disagree with him on more or less every important issue [...]

A Congressional Battle Over Gay Marriage Is Coming

Posted on November 17, 2008 by andrew- Filed Under 2008 elections, DC, gay marriage | Leave a Comment

Washington, DC, probably could have successfully legalized same-sex marriage several years ago were it not for the peculiarities of home rule which allow Congress to veto any law enacted by the city’s democratically chosen legislature and mayor. DC is overwhelmingly Democratic, is fairly liberal on most issues, and is home to a large and politically [...]

Coming Home To The Democrats And Fighting Bigotry

Posted on November 11, 2008 by andrew- Filed Under 2008 elections, California, Jewish voters, gay marriage | Leave a Comment

It was no surprise to me to see my fellow Jews come home to the Obama ticket (supporting him in higher numbers than they supported Kerry!) despite the dire predictions from certain parties. Similarly, I’m not remotely surprised to see that Jews overwhelmingly opposed Prop 8 in California. Don’t forget: The major national reform, conservative, [...]

On Prop 8

I feel a bit guilty right now. I’ve been deliberately avoiding thinking much about Prop 8 passing in California because I haven’t wanted to turn my focus away from Obama winning the presidency and onto less joyous matters. Of course, those directly effected by the ballot measure don’t have the luxury of ignoring it. They [...]

Hooray!

The market might be tanking, but there’s good news out of Connecticut:
Connecticut’s Supreme Court has ruled that same-sex couples have the right to marry, making that state the third behind Massachusetts and California to legalize such unions.
The court agreed with the plaintiffs, who said the state’s marriage law discriminates against them because it applies only [...]

Now I’m Convinced

Kathy G responds to the Tim Kaine speculation by pointing not only to his questionable record on choice, but to his abysmal record on gay marriage. The Virginia governor does not merely oppose gay marriage in the wishy-washy way we expect of Democrats trying to avoid a fight; he actively opposes civil unions and supported [...]

DC’s Gay Marriage “Options”

DCist: Fenty to study legal ramifications for same-sex couple District residents who get married in California per the state’s recent court decision.
Now, I seem to remember Mayor Williams’ administration making gestures towards offering same-sex couples greater legal rights under DC law a few years ago, but backing down when he was threatened with potential retaliation [...]
