Promises, Promises

I couldn’t bring myself to vote for this particular incarnation of the national Republican Party under any circumstances. The good news is that I live in Washington. Would I vote for a local Republican as our mayor? Sure. This is such a one-party town that my protest vote can’t possibly amount to anything more than a protest vote, so I might as well protest. Besides, a Washingtonian Republican nominee wouldn’t be a teabagger; he or she would simply be somewhere in the neighborhood of Ben Nelson. I wouldn’t love it, but I could live with it. Of course, I’d much rather vote for a Statehood-Green, but they might simply endorse the Democratic nominee instead of running one of their own. I also think Jim Graham is a great City Council member, but if the national Democrats fail to pass health care and he still has a “D” next to his name in November, I won’t be voting for him, either.
At this point in time, passing a (decent, because great is out of the question) health care bill is mandatory. Anything less and the Democrats will have proven themselves as incapable of governing as their opponents, if not as maliciously ill-suited to the task.
