SCOTUS Appointment Thoughts

1) I know nothing about her jurisprudence, but Sonia Sotomayor has a very intriguing biography. President Obama appears to have meant what he said about looking for a justice who came from a different background than most of his or her colleagues-to-be. If you believe that a judge’s life experiences will inevitably shape his or her decisions and we therefore ought to seek a variety of backgrounds among the justices (and I do agree wholeheartedly with Obama’s stated position on the matter), this was an excellent pick.
2) I don’t see how anyone can fairly doubt that Sotomayor is qualified in terms of her resume. Her educational record is, apparantly, impeccable, and she seems to have been successful throughout her career. I have no idea of how you might determine who is “most” qualified for the Supreme Court, but Sotomayor appears to have met, if not exceeded, all of the standards we would expect from a nominee.
3) I see that the point about a potential backfire against the Republicans for hypothetically opposing the first Latino Supreme Court appointee is already becoming part of the conventional wisdom. They really are in quite a bind. Additionally, anyone who says that the Republican leadership is acting in good faith rather than simply attacking for the sake of attacking should remember that Mike Huckabee doesn’t even know the name of the woman he says should not be confirmed to the Supreme Court.
