Wednesday Comics

Here’s something I’m really excited about: DC Comics has a new project premiering in about a month, “Wednesday Comics”. Allow me to quote the official description:
Reinventing the classic weekly newspaper comics section, it is a 16-page weekly that unfolds to a sprawling 28″ x 20″ tabloid-sized reading experience bursting with mind-blowing color, action and excitement, [...]
The Last Great American Hero

When I was a teenager, I used to listen to G. Gordon Liddy’s radio show. Not every day or anything, but when I had occasion to be in my car for an extended period of time during the early afternoon, I would frequently flip over to Liddy. I found him uproariously entertaining, in the same [...]

More brilliant ideas from The Onion:
Executives at ABC announced Monday that the network will premier a new Lost spin-off series this fall based around that show’s popular smoke monster character.
The new series, a half-hour family-oriented comedy called Where There’s Smoke, is touted by ABC as the new anchor of its Thursday-night lineup.

ABC sources reported that [...]
Sotomayor, Day 2

I love this Yglesias line:
I had assumed that the way this was going to go was that conservatives would complain that Sotomayor is too liberal, then progressives would try to imply that conservatives were opposing Sotomayor because she’s too Latina, and then conservatives would whine. Instead, though, a large proportion of conservative really do seem [...]
SCOTUS Appointment Thoughts

1) I know nothing about her jurisprudence, but Sonia Sotomayor has a very intriguing biography. President Obama appears to have meant what he said about looking for a justice who came from a different background than most of his or her colleagues-to-be. If you believe that a judge’s life experiences will inevitably shape his or [...]

I’m sure this will be little remarked upon by the liberal mainstream media, but yesterday was an important day for the vast number of Americans who place equal value upon our comic strips and our politics: President Obama got his first “Talking White House” strip in Doonesbury. The tradition of the Talking White House dates [...]
Why Does Nobody Tell Me These Things?

Seriously, how did I miss Crystal City’s free outdoor movie schedule until now1? I already missed all three Spider-Man movies! Thank goodness I can still see every other superhero movie ever made. If only this were being held in, say, Meridian Hill Park instead of stupid far away Virginia, it would be my dream summer [...]
Predictably Infuriating

Ignore for a moment the validity of any argument that could be made either in favor of or against same-sex marriage. Under what possible definition of just government should Congress be able to define marriage law for a local jurisdiction, given that every other local jurisdiction in the country has complete control over its own [...]
Faux-Surprise And All That

So, George W. Bush, not so much keeping up with the current events.
Obviously, this might be more newsworthy had he not spent most of his time in office bragging about the fact that the only part of a newspaper he ever reads is the sports section…

I love Spencer Ackerman’s occasional digressions into Jewish identity. For example: Today’s disgusted-yet-mostly-indifferent reaction to the anti-Semitism of the New York terrorist wannabes. He pretty much nails my feelings on the situation. Plus, he threw in the bonus, “You tell people you care about them through relentless argumentation,” line, and that one always makes me [...]
Must… Write… Something…

I’ve been a crappy blogger lately. I know lots of people say that shortly before allowing their boring blogs to die a well-deserved death, but I feel genuinely guilty about this, seeing as I’ve been blogging more-or-less regularly in one place or another for five years now. I blame three factors for the decline in [...]
Plagiarism At The Times

This is not the reason the newspapers are dying. However, it is a clear example of the reason why no one (outside of the newspaper industry) cares about the newspapers dying.
If I worked for the Times, I would demand Dowd’s immediate dismissal. Otherwise, I’m not sure how I could expect anyone to trust the integrity [...]

No matter how bad we thought they were, they were actually much, much worse.
Here’s the part I still don’t understand: Why were they all so intent on attacking Iraq in particular? “Insanity” just doesn’t satify me, but it’s the only plausible answer I can come up with.

Is any movie more quotable than Mallrats? Uh, anyway, thoughts on Wolverine (spoilers):
*I’m slightly annoyed with the mistreatment of Emma Frost. The White Queen would never be stuck in a little prison cell like that. Nor would she sound like any other adolescent American girl. Weak.
*I’m much more disturbed by the waste of Deadpool. Deadpool [...]

It’s touching to see how much the National Review’s writers claim to care about “School Choice” for DC’s children, especially considering that they don’t appear to care at all for “Representative Choice” or “Senator Choice” for DC’s population as a whole.

Breaking News:
Washington Post reporter Tim Craig relays that the D.C. Council has voted 13-0, without debate, to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states. Watch D.C. Wire for updates.
The approved law was added as an amendment to another bill, and can be seen on the second page of that bill’s text (.pdf).

Michael Tomasky makes a really good point in this post, almost in passing:
Plus, pending an analysis of Sotomayor’s paper trail, if it is her, well, declaring war against and trying to filibuster a Latina woman is another brilliant idea. Here comes Texas, over into the blue column, with all its Latino voters. Unless it secedes [...]

Happy the hippo is leaving the National Zoo for Milwaukee, where he will join two female hippos in the zoo’s new hippo home. Zoo staff have already begun practicing for the trip, scheduled to take place this summer. Fortunately, there are still some animals left at the National Zoo, and they are awfully cute!
