A German engineering firm has created a bionic penguin, complete with 3D sonar. The penguin can use its flippers and flexible neck to swim through the water, while a larger helium-filled model can fly. Meanwhile, Paro the robotic seal is finally available for purchase in the US.
A 13-foot python wrapped a man in its coils and dragged him into a tree last week in Kenya. After biting the snake on the tail in an epic three-hour struggle, the man was freed. The snake was detained, but managed to escape. “We are still seriously looking for the snake,” said a police officer. “We want to arrest the snake because any one of us could fall a victim.” (Hilarious aside: I tried to type “man bites snake” into the BBC website’s search in order to find this article but accidentally typed “man bites snack.” That would not be news!)
Bo update: he is “kind of crazy” and likes to stay up late playing. He also likes to chew on feet. Luckily, Beanie Bo does not.
Two recently cloned animals made their debuts: a camel in Dubai (the world’s first) and a goat in Iran.
Rush Limbaugh has created some PSAs for the Humane Society. I don’t know how to feel about this.
Zoo Basel in Switzerland has some new baby meerkats. Time for my own PSA: Netflix is now offering the first two seasons of Meerkat Manor to be watched instantly!
Scientists have discovered an all-female group of Amazonian ants who reproduce through cloning.
A cat ran onto Wrigley Field on Tuesday during a Cubs game. After a reportedly comical chase, a security guard grabbed the cat by its tail and returned it to the stands. A post-game checkup revealed no injury to the cat. Meanwhile, a lost cat in Minnesota was reunited with his owners through Facebook.
Finally, a sparrow who used cigarette butts to build its nest picked up a lit one and set a store on fire.
