More than 370 of the penguins that have been washing up on the northeastern coast of Brazil were flown south on the world’s cutest cargo plane. They were released onto the beach and scampered away into the ocean.

A new international study has concluded that one-fourth of mammal species in the wild may face extinction. Threatened animals include the polar bear, for which a critical habitat will be designated off the coast of Alaska. Sarah Palin, of course, opposes this decision; her office has filed a lawsuit to overturn the listing of polar bears as threatened. Meanwhile, UK citizens have been asked to report red squirrel sightings during Squirrel Week (huh?), in order to prevent the spread of squirrel pox.

The Nobel Prize in chemistry was awarded to three researchers who developed a green florescent protein from jellyfish for use in molecular tagging. Now we can make glowing animals!

Good news, guys! The New York Times says it’s ok for men to like cats. It’s not ok, however, for small children to like exotic pets – a category which includes hamsters.

A British family allows its donkey to roam the living room. Mountain lions are apparently also fans of the indoor life. Meanwhile, Japanese monkeys are finally earning their keep.

A lion gone wild was caught on webcam taking down its prey. Now that’s what I call adult entertainment!

Finally, a new Banksy art installation was unveiled in New York this week. The artist created a mock pet store, populated by animal-shaped fish sticks, chicken nuggets, and hot dogs.
