“That One”

I missed it last night. Fortunately, there’s video:

My instincts tell me he didn’t mean it to have a racial connotation, but it’s still a terribly disrespectful way of talking about a fellow United States senator and presidential nominee, especially when McCain is sharing a stage with him. I also certainly wouldn’t question anyone who did see a racial connotation, given the other things we’ve seen from McCain over the last few days. Either way, John McCain has descended into complete and utter douchebaggery. Is this really a man you want to see in the Oval Office?

I think you’re right in that it isn’t coming from a conscious racist intent. I think McCain simply substituted “One” for “Senator” but his contempt for Obama and generally antiquated language left him looking petty and nasty. It was objectifying a person sitting right next to him.

Andrew, I agree with you. I don’t think it had any racial undertones or was really anything beyond McCain being a condescending jerk. I also don’t think it is as big a deal as people are makign it out to be, I didn’t even pick up on it the first time through.
