Carol’s Critter Corner: Good Thing I Invested All My Money in Cute Animals Edition

Unfortunately, I missed my chance to invest in the rapidly growing market for animal artwork. On Tuesday the Association of Zoos and Aquariums auctioned off paintings done by animals including snow leopards, sea lions, and penguins.
The Humane Society and local animal shelters have been working hard in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike to rescue stranded pets and reunite them with their owners. Pets and zoo animals seem to be faring a bit better than they did following Hurricane Katrina, but 4,000 cows were killed and up to 20,000 cows and horses remain at large.
Police in Scotland were not amused when a woman called the emergency 999 number to report that the rabbit she bought from a newspaper ad did not have floppy ears as promised. Police in Arizona were quite pleased, however, when a trained assistance dog called 911 after his owner had a seizure.
A strange new species of ant was found in the Amazon. The ants are pale, sightless, and “totally new to science.” Meanwhile, hundreds of new aquatic species have been discovered in three reefs in Australia.
An Arlington man was charged this week with smuggling exotic beetles in from Japan. Luckily, he was caught before he was able to start breeding the ones that can grow up to SIX INCHES LONG.
