Carol’s Critter Corner: Vacation Edition

Posted on August 29, 2008 by Carol

Sorry to leave you hanging yesterday, animal fans! Don’t worry, though, there’s no way I would go on vacation without bringing you this week’s critter stories.

First up: Fredrick residents were surprised to find a bear cub up a tree on Monday morning.  The bear reportedly climbed almost 60 feet up the tree, hung out for about five hours, then descended and wandered around.  He also ate some apples.

Florida firefighters used technology for good this week: they used a thermal imaging camera to rescue a tiny kitten who was stuck in a wall.  Meanwhile, a four-year-old cat in Canada survived seven weeks walled in beneath a bathtub.  Her rescue was less fancy but just as heartwarming.

A raccoon in Atlanta went on a courthouse crime spree. Crime didn’t pay for this little guy, who was eventually captured and is to be released on a farm.

A 30-year-old tortoise was accidentally sent to the landfill – but then he was rescued!

Cattle and wild deer align themselves north-south.

A cat in China recently grew wings.  I’m as confused as you are.

Wind farms pose a danger to bats: the turbines give them the bends.  [Insert Radiohead joke here.]

Panda gives birth. Carol is disgusted.

Crows offer conclusive proof that Dick Cheney is a human being.

That’s it for this week.  I’m on vacation!!
