Carol’s Critter Corner: Vacation Edition
Posted on August 29, 2008 by Carol- Filed Under Carol's Critter Corner, Radiohead, pandas | 1 Comment
Sorry to leave you hanging yesterday, animal fans! Don’t worry, though, there’s no way I would go on vacation without bringing you this week’s critter stories.
First up: Fredrick residents were surprised to find a bear cub up a tree on Monday morning. The bear reportedly climbed almost 60 feet up the tree, hung out [...]
One More Before I Leave

I don’t know if any of the networks plan on showing MLK’s “I Have A Dream” speech in it’s entirety prior to broadcasting the festivities from Mile High, so I’m going to go ahead and post it. I know I haven’t listened to the whole thing since elementary school; perhaps you haven’t, either. Watch the [...]

I’m going out of town tomorrow morning. I’ll be back on Tuesday, but then I’ll be away again next weekend. Don’t expect me to have much time to say anything about the Republican’s convention, as I won’t really be around. Worse yet, don’t expect me to say much about Obama’s big speech tonight, as I’m [...]

As I said, I thought Hillary was outstanding.
And here’s the unexpected other star of the evening, Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer:
Talk about an affable, likeable politician who knows how to get things done; talk about a Democrat who strives for bipartisanship but isn’t afraid to attack the Republicans when they deserve it. If anyone has come [...]
“No Way, No How, No McCain”

Holy crap, Hillary Clinton is bringing it. It’s still early, but her first five minutes were phenomenal.
UPDATE: WOW. Just as good as some of Obama’s best speeches. Just as good as some of her husband’s best speeches. Fantastic.

McCain Bait
Posted on August 26, 2008 by andrew- Filed Under 2008 presidential election, John McCain | Leave a Comment
Actually, I think Rendell was engaging in some clever and tactical McCain Baiting. It’s a ploy I’d like to see more Democratic Party figures attempt over the next month or so. The strategy is simple: Throw out a reference to some person, event, or other notable relic from at least fifty years ago, and see [...]
“Dangerous Aggression”
Posted on August 26, 2008 by andrew- Filed Under 2008 presidential election, John McCain, political ads | Leave a Comment
John McCain wants to scare you, and he wants to use Hillary Clinton to do it. Only one problem: If Americans are truly scared of “dangerous aggression”, one of the fears named in the ad, they sure as hell aren’t going to turn around and vote for the dangerously aggressive warmonger.

If you haven’t figured it out yet, blogging will probably be lightish this week what with the probable lack of actual news. If anything does happen I’ll jump in with the usual insightful commentary, but for now, I’m not expecting to do much writing.
Anyway, here’s Michelle Obama’s speech from last night.
The candidate’s wife is getting [...]
Things I Don’t Care About

Anyone who writes a post on their blog to let me know that they are Twittering from the convention… And especially anyone who then transfers those Twitters to a blog post because, in their mind, I was apparently dying to read the Twitters but unable to follow the link they already posted.
Fuck that. I don’t [...]

Obama/Biden

When pollsters ask voters about the most important issue to them in this election, I’m always disappointed, but not remotely surprised, to see my own answer not even make the list. See, if any pollster asked me the question, I wouldn’t even hesitate before saying, “Torture.” For the millionth time I ask, WHY THE FUCK [...]
Carol’s Critter Corner: Rescue Edition
Posted on August 22, 2008 by Carol- Filed Under Carol's Critter Corner, pandas | Leave a Comment
What’s up with all the animals needing rescue this week? Please, dogs and cats, stay out of storm drainage systems, stop climbing poles and ledges, and, for goodness’ sake, avoid cars and traffic! You can keep on rescuing moms, babies, and kittens if you want, though.
Turns out the colossal squid may be not [...]
God Save The Queen

It’s probably just me, but the floor surrounding the stage in the Republican Convention’s arena reminds me somewhat of the UK’s Union Jack, producing a weird contrast with the ginormous American Flag. It’s a bit distracting and probably not the intended effect.
DNC on the left, RNC on the right:
The DNC’s design isn’t great, but it [...]

I don’t usually complain about crime in DC. I feel perfectly safe living in the U Street/Columbia Heights area and traveling to pretty much any other neighborhood I would have reason to visit. There are a few crime-heavy hotspots I tend to avoid at night when I’m alone, but certainly nothing that would interfere with [...]

The Bush administration is trying to quietly redefine birth control as abortion and limit access to both with a few seemingly small and innocuous regulatory changes before they run out of time in office. Don’t let them do it.

The Thin Line Between Satire And Reality
Posted on August 21, 2008 by andrew- Filed Under 2008 presidential election, John McCain | Leave a Comment
I’ve been waiting all day to be able to post something similar to the following, knowing it would appear sooner or later if only I were patient. TPM Election Central delivers the goods:
The McCain campaign is road-testing a new argument in responding to Obama’s criticism of his number-of-houses gaffe, an approach the McCain camp has [...]
All I’m Saying Is That I Think I Own Zero Houses, But For All I Know, Maybe I Bought A Few And Forgot About Them
Posted on August 21, 2008 by andrew- Filed Under 2008 presidential election, John McCain, elitism | Leave a Comment
Oh, sure, it’s easy to pretend John McCain doesn’t know how many houses he owns. But as we all know, John McCain does not speak for John McCain. Obviously, John McCain does know how many houses he owns and simply was not speaking for himself when he said he does not know how many houses [...]

Tuesday’s loss guaranteed a losing record on the season even with 36 games left to be played. Today, with 35 games remaining, the Nationals positively command [...]

Old men aren’t supposed to understand how to make gadgets work, but they’re supposed to love tinkering with them all the same. What kind of old man doesn’t like to tinker with gadgets? John McCain, apparently:
The AP has released a “pre-convention package” with lists of “25 Things About Obama” and “25 Things About McCain.” Number [...]
Understanding Elitists
Posted on August 20, 2008 by andrew- Filed Under 2008 presidential election, elitism | Leave a Comment
Elitists shop at farmers’ markets where they talk to stay-at-home mothers, car salesmen, and bakers of homemade biscuits.
Real people shop at grocery stores and stand by helplessly as applesauce pours from the shelves.
