Really Pathetic Question

Posted on July 21, 2008 by andrew

Allow me to preface this with an acknowledgment that the following renders me roughly as out-of-touch as a Republican presidential nominee.

So, umm, can anyone suggest some music blogs I might enjoy? It occurs to me I no longer listen to the radio in any capacity whatsoever. I subscribe to a small number of podcasts, but I barely get around to listening to those; the only one I consistently keep up with is NPR’s All Songs Considered. Basically, if something doesn’t come in an RSS format, I no longer pay any attention to it, so I need some good music blogs.

I have no idea of what the popular music blogs might be and I have no idea of how to find them. If you have a sense of my tastes because you know me or read regularly, great. If not, I’m willing to try something random if you take the time to recommend it, so just throw it out there (but I’m probably looking for something with indie rock leanings as long as it isn’t too pretentious to avoid anything mainstream, such as Beck’s new album, which is the last album I downloaded).

I know you’re a big City Paper fan, so check out http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/blogs/blackplasticbag/

There’s also the old standbys, pitchfork http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/
    and Brooklyn Vegan http://www.brooklynvegan.com/

Did you like Beck’s new album? Perhaps you thought it was pretentious, or maybe it was mainstream? Who knows?!

Sadie: The CP blog and Brooklyn Vegan look like exactly the types of suggestions I wanted. Thanks!
Pitchfork is less useful because they don’t really offer much in the way of blog/RSS formats… I’m already subscribed to their “Best new music” feed, but it updates rather infrequently.

Aquarium Drunkard is one of the best. It offers a nice mix of old and new at http://www.aquariumdrunkard.com/

Largehearted boy, in addition to containing a wonderful GBV reference, features a great daily round-up of music news/interviews and lit.

WFMU could very well be the country’s best radio station. You can stream them over the internet and read their blog at http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/

Pitchfork is still worth checking out and Cokemachineglow is excellent for reviews.

I got a chance to check out most of those last night. I really like Cokemachineglow’s reviews and Largehearted boy’s sampling of free mp3s. Oddly enough, WFMU’s stream was talk programs both times I tuned in last night, but the blog makes it look like they play some good stuff when they’re playing music.
    Thanks, Jim.

[...] I never heard of it until just now when it popped up in my Amazon recommendations? No wonder I had to ask for music blog suggestions last [...]
