Taking Care Of The Elderly Is Disgraceful

Just ask John McCain:

“Americans have got to understand that we are paying present-day retirees with the taxes paid by young workers in America today. And that’s a disgrace. It’s an absolute disgrace, and it’s got to be fixed.

Now, as every blogger who picked up this story before me has noted, what McCain describes is exactly the way Social Security was designed to work. My grandfather paid Social Security taxes while his mother, who was too old to contribute much to the program, was retired. My mother has paid Social Security taxes throughout her working life to cover my grandparents’ retirements. When my mother retires, I’ll still be paying Social Security taxes to help provide for her retirement. And someday, when I retire, my theoretical children will be paying into Social Security while I’m living the good life at the Old Bloggers’ Home. That’s how Social Security works.

I can’t emphasize this enough: The principle John McCain calls disgraceful has been one of the most important factors in creating, strengthening, and supporting the American middle class as it exists today.

One candidate in this election is out of touch with mainstream America, and it is not the one with the funny foreign name.
