Help Please

Can anyone explain the lede in a Post article about Mei Xiang maybe or maybe not being pregnant again?
Did the rabbit die at the National Zoo?
Let’s hope so: Zoo officials said today that a recent hormone spike detected in the urine of giant panda Mei Xiang may be a sign that she is pregnant again.Or not.
Uh, what? What rabbit? Why are we hoping it died? I assume there’s some well-known metaphor/euphemism/expression involving rabbits and pregnancies of which Phil (who sent me the article) and I are unaware? Does anyone have any idea of what this was supposed to mean?

Wow, are you really that young that you’ve never heard the phrase before? Next you’re going to tell me that you have never seen a telephone with a dial. Stop making me feel old, Drew!
They’ve changed the lede: “The Panda Watch is on again at the National Zoo.” I guess you weren’t the only one who was confused.
Also of note: “Mei Xiang, the possibly pregnant panda, spent a leisurely day yawning and napping early this month.” That sounds like the life for me.

Carol wants a baby, Andrew. And she wants one before Mei Xiang.
You heard it here first.
As long as I get to spend leisurely days yawning and napping and the baby is either a panda or a penguin, then I’m sold.
