McCain’s Speech

Posted on June 3, 2008 by andrew

Obviously I have my biases here, but it honestly feels as thought Senator McCain is more concerned with defining himself as what he is not than with defining himself as what he is. I’m not complaining because he’s attacking Barack Obama; nothing he’s said has been below the belt. I’m merely saying that his message strikes me as a definition by negatives: John McCain is not Barack Obama and John McCain is not George Bush. Even the slogan on the set dressing behind the senator bears a slogan that is a direct response to Obama (”Leadership we can believe in”). That’s all well and good, but it’s not going to win an election.

In my mind, John Kerry’s biggest problem was the lack of a narrative. Bush always controlled the election because Kerry was never able to clearly state the core of his own campaign. My suspicion is that John McCain is slowly but steadily digging himself into a very similar hole.

…And holy crap, MSNBC just broke into McCain’s speech to declare Barack Obama the presumptive Democratic Party nominee for president.

I’m giddy.
