That’s The Joke [in the McBain voice, naturally]

So I really wanted to say that Mike Huckabee certainly couldn’t have intended for his joke about Barack Obama dodging a gunman to actually be a comment about how funny it would be if someone aimed a gun at Barack Obama. The premise is so obviously tasteless and lacking in humor that Huckabee, who is usually pretty genial and outwardly decent despite my loathing of his political views, must have been going for some other source of humor and totally fumbled the ball. Except… Nothing else makes sense:

Republican Mike Huckabee responded to an offstage noise during his speech to the National Rifle Association by suggesting it was Barack Obama diving to the floor because someone had aimed a gun at him.

Hearing a loud noise and interrupting his speech, Huckabee said: “That was Barack Obama. He just tripped off a chair. He’s getting ready to speak and somebody aimed a gun at him and he — he dove for the floor.”

The joke couldn’t have been the typical “Democrats are girly-men” riff because presumably anyone would dive for the floor if a gun were aimed at them, right? Is there some other punchline that I’m missing? I’m trying really hard to look at this objectively and the only thing I can come up with is that Mike Huckabee actually thought, for at least a brief moment while improvising, that there would be something funny about the attempted assassination of Barack Obama.

I guess he’s never running for elected office again.
