Elisabeth Bumiller, proudly part of the problem, discusses the rumors suggesting Condoleeza Rice wants to be on the McCain ticket:
Mr. McCain, who has been critical of the Bush administration’s handling of Iraq, told reporters that Ms. Rice, who was national security adviser during the first year and a half of the conflict, bore some responsibility for the management of the war.
[Emphasis added]
When? When has he been critical of Bush’s Iraq policy on real, substantive grounds? Claiming to have called for Rummy’s departure three years ago when no evidence exists to support such a claim is not criticism. Wholeheartedly supporting the surge is most definitely not criticism. Ditto for wholeheartedly supporting the initial invasion. Asking the president to send more soldiers to fight an unwinnable war when the president didn’t actually have any available soldiers to send may have technically been criticism, but is that really our basis for calling McCain a critic of Bush’s policy? ‘Cause I’m not buying it.
