So Much Depression

I’ve spent all week blogging and I’ve barely mentioned Iraq once despite the steady stream of delightful news coming from our favorite failed colony over the past few days. Why? It just doesn’t seem like there’s much to say beyond, “This whole thing sure looks to be going to hell.” Of course, it’s been going to hell for five years and counting now, so that’s not exactly the most insightful bit of commentary.
I guess from an electoral standpoint this is probably bad news for John McCain and congressional Republicans, but that’s not really the point so much. In almost exactly ten months we will, in all likelihood, finally start getting our own soldiers out of harm’s way. But are any of us really going to feel that good about what we leave behind? Don’t get me wrong, I want our soldiers home, because (through no fault of their own, obviously) they can’t do much to improve the situation at this point. Even if they manage to get things back under some semblance of control over the next few weeks or months, all this shit is just going to flare up again- and again- and again- whether or not they stick around longer to continue trying to contain it.
